Dublin,Ireland Mar 2-The family of Liam Payne has spoken out against the intense media scrutiny following the pop star’s tragic death, condemning the speculation and coverage that they say has inflicted lasting emotional damage, particularly on his young son.
Payne, 31, died in October last year after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. A postmortem report ruled his cause of death as “polytrauma” resulting from multiple injuries and internal bleeding. Toxicology tests further revealed that alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant were present in his system at the time of his passing.
His death was marked with an emotional tribute at the BRIT Awards on Saturday night, where a video montage celebrated his legacy, including his time on The X Factor and as a member of One Direction—the band that won seven BRIT Awards before splitting in 2016. Comedian Jack Whitehall, a close friend of the singer, led the tribute, calling Payne “a supremely gifted musician and an incredibly kind soul.”

Following the awards ceremony, Payne’s family released a statement, calling his passing “an unspeakable tragedy” and expressing their deep grief and pain. The statement emphasized that Payne’s son, Bear, aged seven, is struggling to process emotions that no child should have to endure.
The family also acknowledged the investigation by Argentine authorities, which led to the Court of Appeal dropping all charges against those initially implicated in Payne’s death. However, two individuals are still facing prosecution for allegedly supplying drugs, a crime in Argentina that carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
Despite accepting the legal outcome, the family strongly criticized the media attention surrounding Payne’s death, stating that it had exacerbated their grief and caused irreparable harm to their family, particularly to his son.
“The constant media attention and speculation that has accompanied this process has exacted indescribable, lasting damage on the family,” the statement read. “Liam ought to have had a long life ahead of him. Instead, Bear has lost his father, Geoff and Karen have lost their son, Ruth and Nicola have lost their brother, and all of Liam’s friends and fans have lost someone they held very dear.”

The family has pleaded for privacy, urging the press and the public to allow them the space to grieve without further intrusion. They reiterated their wish for dignity and respect as they continue to come to terms with their devastating loss.
